Tips for Getting Your Medical Assistant Degree

If you have always wanted to work in the rewarding medical field, one place to start is as a medical assistant. The first thing you'll need to do after deciding on this career is get your medical assistant degree. Some of the tasks you will perform in this job are specialized and thus require specialized training, which is what educational facilities with medical assisting programs offer. You get both classroom learning and hands-on learning in a clinical environment. Most programs offer the opportunity for internships, which places students in real life medical work environments.

Medical assistant degrees can lead to rewarding and lucrative job opportunities. You should aim for more than just a medical assistant diploma. In most jobs you will need no less than an Associate's degree in medical assisting to even get your foot in the door. It is recommended by the American Association of Medical Assistants that in addition to your degree, you obtain your certification. Becoming a certified medical assistant does not require additional education but it does require successful completion of an official exam.

The medical assistant certification exam is given in January, June and October so you have three chances each year to take it. There are tons of books and materials on the subject that can help you study. It's recommended that you take the exam as soon as possible after graduation so the material you learned in school will be fresh in your mind. You can take the registered medical assistant exam (a more prestigious exam) after you've put in a certain number of work hours and meet the various criteria.

When it comes to getting your medical assistant degree, there is no magic formula. You just need to enroll at an accredited school, keep your grades as high as possible and work hard to succeed. Once you have graduated from school and possibly earned your CMA designation you will feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that you have definitely earned. Once you're satisfied with your education, you can start the process of looking for a job. Registering with an association like the AAMA can help you with this process. You may also want to check the Help Wanted ads and send out resumes and cover letters to medical offices that interest you.
